Emphysema

When the tiny air sacs in the lungs break down and lose their elasticity.

What is Emphysema?

Emphysema is the form of COPD where the lungs' tiny air sacs — alveoli — actually break down, reducing the surface area available for getting oxygen into the blood. It tends to show up as breathlessness that's disproportionate to how much you're actually doing, sometimes even at rest in advanced cases. Many people describe a sense that a full breath just doesn't quite feel satisfying anymore, however hard they try.

How regenerative medicine supports it

We start from your CT imaging and spirometry, particularly diffusion capacity testing where available, since that tells us how much alveolar surface area has actually been lost. Therapy is aimed at reducing inflammation and supporting oxygenation, often paired with hyperbaric oxygen and structured breathing rehabilitation. We're direct that destroyed alveoli do not regrow with anything currently available, including with us — the goal is making the most of remaining lung tissue, not restoring what's gone.

If the evidence for treating emphysema this way is thin, we will tell you before you book — and the review is not billed.

Emphysema — Questions Patients Ask

Can this regrow the air sacs that have already broken down?

No — destroyed alveoli don't regenerate with any treatment currently available, and we're upfront about that rather than letting it sit unclear.

How is emphysema different from COPD generally?

Emphysema is one specific pattern within COPD, involving destruction of the alveoli themselves, while COPD as a broader term also includes chronic bronchitis and airway narrowing that can occur separately or together.

Will hyperbaric oxygen actually help if my lung surface area is reduced?

It can support how effectively the oxygen you do absorb gets used by your tissues, but it doesn't increase the lung's own gas exchange surface, so expectations need to stay realistic.

Is surgery like lung volume reduction something you'd discuss?

That's a pulmonology and thoracic surgery decision based on your specific CT findings and function tests; we'd support recovery around it if relevant but wouldn't make or replace that call.

What can genuinely improve with the right support?

Breathing efficiency, exercise tolerance, and reducing flare-up frequency are realistic goals we track through walk tests and symptom diaries, even though the underlying tissue loss itself stays as it is.
